On 5 December, in a friendly meeting in Dujiangyan, Sichuan Province, Chinese President Xi Jinping and French President Emmanuel Macron exchanged views to enhance China–France relations.
President Xi briefed President Macron on the history and significance of the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project, noting that it is the only ancient irrigation system still in operation worldwide. He described it as one of the oldest and most successful practices of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature. Xi highlighted that the project reflects the Chinese people’s spirit of self-improvement, perseverance, and forward-thinking. “Every time I visit Dujiangyan, I am impressed by the ingenuity of our ancestors in managing water according to geographical conditions, benefiting the people. There is much to learn from this in state governance. France shares a similar spirit, which enables both countries to better understand and respect each other,” Xi said.
In response, President Macron praised the over two-thousand-year-old project for its enduring importance, underscoring the wisdom and hard work of the Chinese people. He added that China and France share a long history, and cooperation between the two nations will bring benefits to their peoples.
During the discussion, Xi emphasized that diplomatic ties between China and France are not merely a “handshake” between two independent states but a convergence of two great civilizations. He expressed confidence that through dialogue and cooperation, both nations can jointly contribute to global peace, stability, and human development.
Both leaders agreed to maintain close communication and exchanges and to work together to advance the overall strategic partnership between China and France.
