International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry attended the opening ceremony of China’s 15th National Games in Guangdong Province on November 9. In an exclusive interview with China Media Group (CMG) on Wednesday, November 12, she described this edition of the National Games as highly significant and expressed hope that sports will play a positive role in the development of the Greater Bay Area.
Coventry stated that the Games are extremely meaningful. “During our visit to China, we participated in several activities, including a meeting with President Xi Jinping. The vision he outlined for the development of the Greater Bay Area is very clear, and it not only sets objectives but also provides concrete implementation plans,” she said.
She added that sports could act as a catalyst and driving force in this process. Highlighting the participation of representatives from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau, Coventry described it as a particularly joyful and important signal of regional integration.
Praising President Xi’s vision, Coventry noted that China’s sports infrastructure is extensive and benefits not only professional athletes but also the wider community. “This approach to development is truly powerful,” she emphasized.
