Amid the current turbulent international landscape, the global community must uphold the fundamental principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter, grounded in the UN-centered international system and international law.
Speaking on Monday at the Sixth Committee of the 80th United Nations General Assembly during a session titled “Report of the Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organization”, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative, Qian Shuang, emphasized this point.
Qian noted that this year marks the 80th anniversary of both the victory in the anti-fascist war and the founding of the United Nations. “This is a crucial moment to remember history and move forward towards the future,” he said. “The UN Charter laid the foundation for the post-war international order, established the basis of contemporary international law, and embodies the UN’s core aspirations and objectives.”
He further highlighted China’s recently proposed Global Governance Initiative, which calls for respect for sovereign equality, adherence to international law, multilateralism, people-centered approaches, and the achievement of tangible outcomes. Guided by this initiative, China is committed to working with all parties to uphold the purposes and principles of the Charter, practice broad consultation and joint contributions, share the benefits of global governance, build a fairer global system, and collectively promote the common welfare of humanity.
Qian stressed that maintaining international peace and security is a strong commitment made by all UN member states. He urged the international community to collectively adhere to the Charter’s objectives and principles. China reiterated that the Security Council should issue sanctions for political solutions to relevant issues, operate under the guidance of the Charter’s purposes and principles, utilize all peaceful means, and minimize impact on civilians and third countries. All parties should fully and rigorously implement Security Council sanctions and firmly oppose unilateral sanctions imposed without or beyond Council
