China to Strengthen the Role of Law in National Security and Stability

Chinese President Xi Jinping has issued an important directive calling for comprehensive advancement of the rule of law across the country. He emphasized the full implementation of the thought on socialist rule of law with Chinese characteristics for the new era, highlighting the need to uphold the Party’s unified leadership, ensure the people’s status as masters of the nation, and safeguard the authority of the law.

Xi stressed that all departments responsible for legal affairs must faithfully fulfill their duties and take effective measures to accelerate the building of a law-based China.

Meanwhile, at the CPC Central Committee’s Conference on Advancing Law-Based Governance—held in Beijing from 17 to 18 November—Zhao Leji, Chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, underscored the importance of strengthening all aspects of governing the country according to law. He said that high-quality development requires robust legal safeguards, and emphasized the need to protect citizens’ rights and interests, enhance public well-being, and ensure fairness and justice in accordance with the law.

Zhao further stated that safeguarding national security and social stability must remain a priority, alongside strengthening foreign-related legal systems and capabilities. He called for strong legal guarantees to ensure progress in realizing socialist modernization. Additionally, he urged the acceleration of efforts to build a comprehensive model framework for a socialist legal system with Chinese characteristics; the strengthening of law-based governance; the promotion of judicial fairness; the deepening of efforts to build a law-based society; and the establishment of a solid foundation for building a high-level socialist rule-of-law nation.
