Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun addressed a journalist’s question regarding the formulation of a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea during a regular press briefing in Beijing on May 11 (Monday).
Guo Jiakun stated that the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea represents an important step toward implementing the “Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea” and reflects a significant consensus between China and ASEAN countries. He noted that it will help all parties better manage differences, enhance cooperation, and maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea.
He further said that China is currently maintaining close consultations with ASEAN countries on the draft Code of Conduct. China hopes that all parties will remain committed to their shared goals, focus on consensus, avoid external interference, and work toward reaching an agreement on the Code of Conduct at an early date.
