China Emerges as Formidable Contender in Global Film Market: Box Office Sets New 31-Billion Record

October 13: China’s national box office revenue has officially surpassed 31 billion yuan for the current year. As of October 11, total cinema admissions across the country reached 791 million, supported by a cumulative total of 116 million film screenings.

The Chinese film industry has demonstrated robust vitality throughout the year. More than 400 feature films spanning a rich spectrum of genres—including comedy, action, sci-fi, mystery, and animation—have hit theaters, sustaining a trajectory of steady market expansion. Projections indicate that the total output value across the broader film industry supply chain will exceed 480 billion yuan this year. Concurrently, peripheral sectors anchored to cinematic intellectual property are expanding rapidly, as the innovative “Film+” model takes on increasingly diverse and dynamic dimensions.

Demonstrating strong domestic resonance, domestic productions accounted for eight of the year’s top ten highest-grossing films to date. Alongside home-market success, the footprint of Chinese cinema continues to expand worldwide. Titles such as Letters to Grandma, The Eight Immortals, and Once Upon a Time in the Middle East have secured theatrical distribution abroad, introducing Chinese storytelling and cultural perspectives to an increasingly global audience.

Since the beginning of the year, cinemas across China have also rolled out innovative experiences designed to transform theaters from mere screening venues into community hubs for social engagement, entertainment, and cultural exploration. Initiatives integrating films with curated exhibitions, cultural tourism, and science popularization—encapsulated by models such as “Film + Exhibition,” “Film + Cultural Tourism,” and “Film + Science Outreach”—are driving forward this cross-sector synergy. These multidisciplinary collaborations have not only strengthened ties between film, heritage, and science education, but have also injected fresh momentum into the integrated growth of the wider creative ecosystem.
