Chief Advisor urges Qatari investors to invest in Bangladesh
Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has urged Qatari investors to invest in Bangladesh. The Chief Advisor made the call at an event titled ‘Bilateral Investment Opportunities between Qatar and Bangladesh’ in the country’s capital Doha on Wednesday (April 23).
Dr. Yunus said that Bangladesh has now returned to business anew and on a large scale. In addition, the interim government has taken various steps to create an investment-friendly environment and is working on its promise to build a corruption-free ‘new Bangladesh’. He sought the partnership of Qatari investors to fulfill that.
In his speech, he recounted an inspiring story of a time when Bangladesh convinced Norway’s Telenor to invest in the country, which later turned into the company’s most profitable project. The Chief Advisor also mentioned that if you ever think of Bangladesh as an investment destination, now is the best time to do so.
Energy Advisor Fawzul Kabir Khan said at the event that when the interim government took office, Bangladesh’s total debt was 3.2 billion US dollars. Now it has reduced to 600 million. Of this, Qatar Energy’s outstanding debt is 254 million dollars, which has been fully repaid by Wednesday.
He highlighted energy security and advanced infrastructure plans, which will bring benefits to Qatar.
At the event, BIDA Executive Chairman Ashiq Chowdhury presented the country’s investment opportunities and the government’s reform programs to the country’s investors and expatriate Bangladeshis. Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain was present at the event. And the closing speech was delivered by Bangladesh Ambassador to Qatar Md. Nazrul Islam.
