Canadian High Commissioner Calls on the State Minister for Foreign Affairs

Dhaka, 20 September 2026: Mr. Ajit Singh, High Commissioner of Canada to Bangladesh, paid a maiden call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. Humaiun Kobir at the latter’s office this afternoon.

The State Minister warmly welcomed the High Commissioner. Discussions touched on ways Bangladesh and Canada could work together to uphold multilateralism. They hoped for high-level engagements on the sidelines of upcoming UN General Assembly.

The two sides discussed avenues for enhancing bilateral trade, including diversification beyond garments into sectors such as light engineering and machinery, along with the exchange of business delegations.

The State Minister highlighted the contributions of the over 100,000-strong Bangladeshi diaspora in Canada.

He also thanked Canada for its continued support to the Rohingya response, while the High Commissioner reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to a safe, dignified and voluntary return of the Rohingya to Myanmar.

In the context of Bangladesh’s chairmanship of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, the State Minister sought Canada’s support on climate leadership and climate financing.

The Canadian High Commissioner also raised the possibility of a framework of cooperation on agriculture between the two countries, and the two sides exchanged views on energy cooperation.

Both sides reaffirmed that the Bangladesh-Canada relationship continues to be anchored in friendship and mutual trust.
