BJP Takes Strong Lead in West Bengal Election Count, Setback Looms for Trinamool Congress

India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken a commanding lead in the vote count for the West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections, significantly outpacing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).

According to trends available until Monday afternoon, the BJP was leading in 194 seats, while the incumbent Trinamool Congress was ahead in 94 constituencies.

In the 294-member state assembly, a party or coalition requires 148 seats to form the government. Based on the current trends, the BJP appears well-positioned to secure a majority and form the next government in the state.

State BJP leaders have already begun celebrating the party’s performance. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari claimed that the Trinamool Congress era in West Bengal is nearing its end and that voters are signalling support for political change.

Political discussions are now increasingly focused on who could become the next Chief Minister if the BJP secures victory. Indian media reports have mentioned several prominent leaders as possible contenders, including Suvendu Adhikari, Samik Bhattacharya, Dilip Ghosh, Sukanta Majumdar, and Swapan Dasgupta.

Analysts say that if these trends are reflected in the final results, West Bengal could witness a major political transformation. The outcome would represent a significant setback for the Trinamool Congress, which has maintained strong influence in the state for more than a decade.
