Barrister Jahrat Adib Chowdhury, MP, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been elected as a Member of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) from the Asia-Pacific Geopolitical Group.
Barrister Chowdhury was elected today at the 153rd IPU Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania, securing a majority of the votes. Representatives of the 37 member countries of the IPU’s Asia-Pacific Group participated in the election.
The election marks another significant achievement for Bangladesh under the present BNP-led Government, following its election to the Presidency of the 81st UN General Assembly. It reflects the international community’s continued trust in the Government’s commitment to strengthening parliamentary democracy and is expected to further enhance the country’s voice and representation in the international parliamentary arena.
The IPU is the global organization of national parliaments, promoting democratic governance, peace, sustainable development and parliamentary diplomacy and cooperation.
A Bangladesh parliamentary delegation, led by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram, is currently attending the 153rd IPU Assembly.
