Bangladesh Reports 528 Measles-Related Deaths in Six Weeks

Bangladesh recorded 16 more deaths linked to measles symptoms in the last 24 hours, according to a statement issued on Sunday by the Health Directorate’s control room.

The statement said that among the latest fatalities, 10 were reported in Dhaka, two in Mymensingh, and one each in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Barishal, and Sylhet.

According to official data, since March 15, a total of 442 people have died with suspected measles symptoms, while another 86 patients died after laboratory-confirmed measles infections. The combined death toll has now reached 528.

During the same period, 50,558 people were hospitalized across the country with measles-related symptoms. Of them, 46,214 have already been discharged after receiving treatment.

The Health Directorate also reported that since March 15, measles-like symptoms have been identified in 63,813 children nationwide. Meanwhile, 8,622 cases have been officially confirmed as measles infections.

Public health experts warn that the situation could become more alarming unless vaccination campaigns are intensified rapidly and infected patients are brought under timely medical care.
