Bangladesh Deepens Cultural Diplomacy in UK as State Minister Shama Obaed Visits Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum

OXFORD, Oct. 31 — Bangladesh is expanding its cultural diplomacy and bilateral people-to-people links with the United Kingdom, focusing on institutional museum partnerships, creative industry growth, and contemporary art exchanges, following an official visit by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, MP, to the Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford.

Undertaking the visit at the formal invitation of the institution, the State Minister was accompanied by Bangladesh High Commissioner to the UK Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith and senior diplomatic officials.

During the tour, State Minister Shama Obaed reviewed “Climate, Culture, Care,” an exhibition by Bangladeshi artist Soma Surovi Jannat. The display marks a historic milestone as the first solo exhibition by a Bangladesh-based contemporary artist hosted at a major museum institution in the United Kingdom. Curators guided the delegation through the exhibit, with the State Minister commending the depth, thematic resonance, and artistic sophistication of Jannat’s exploration of ecological and societal heritage.

The diplomatic engagement included bilateral discussions with Dr. Mallica Kumbera Landrus, Keeper of Eastern Art and Curator at the Ashmolean Museum. Talks focused on establishing structured avenues of collaboration between British cultural bodies and Bangladeshi artistic institutions, expanding residency and exchange initiatives for emerging Bangladeshi artists, and bolstering Dhaka’s domestic creative economy.

The visit underscores the expanding international profile of Bangladesh’s contemporary arts and highlights the government’s strategic focus on cultural diplomacy as a vital instrument of foreign policy—building mutual goodwill, enriching bilateral dialogue, and cementing long-term connections between the peoples of Bangladesh and the United Kingdom.
