Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester and a prominent figure within the Labour Party, has been elected as the new leader of the United Kingdom’s ruling Labour Party, moving a step closer to becoming the country’s next prime minister.
Under the planned transition process, once current Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigns, King Charles III is expected to invite Burnham to form a government.
According to an Al Jazeera report, Prime Minister Keir Starmer is scheduled to formally submit his resignation to King Charles III on Monday (July 20). Following this, the King will invite Andy Burnham to form the next government. If Burnham accepts the invitation, he will officially become the UK prime minister and begin leading the new Cabinet from 10 Downing Street.
Party sources said the Labour Party recently held a special conference to finalize Burnham’s leadership, where he was formally confirmed as the party’s new leader.
Speaking about his plans after taking charge, Burnham said under his leadership the Labour Party would strengthen its position once again as the party of working people. He identified public services, social justice, and reducing economic inequality as key priorities for his government.
Burnham also said that even as prime minister, he would continue to shape policies based on the real-life experiences of ordinary citizens and maintain close engagement with the public.
A long-time popular figure among Labour lawmakers, Burnham has consistently enjoyed strong support among party members in opinion polls. Having served as Mayor of Greater Manchester for nearly a decade, he has gained a reputation for administrative experience and is often referred to as the “King of the North.”
In his political career, Burnham served as the Member of Parliament for Leigh from 2001 to 2017, during which he held several senior government positions, including roles in the health and culture ministries.
Burnham had previously contested the Labour leadership race twice but failed to secure victory. He lost to Ed Miliband in 2010 and Jeremy Corbyn in 2015. His latest success marks a major turning point in his political career, placing him on the path toward becoming the United Kingdom’s next prime minister.
