Australian firefighters said on Friday (Dec 27) they were working to contain a wildfire that had broken out in one of the country’s national parks. The fires have consumed an area the size of Singapore.
On the other hand, the news agency AFP from Sydney reported that the eastern province of Victoria experienced extreme fire conditions last week. During this time, dozens of rural communities had to be evacuated from their homes due to numerous fires.
State Control Center spokesman Luke Hegarty said the fire has so far burned 74,000 hectares of the Grampians National Park, 240 kilometers west of Melbourne.
“We are talking about a wildfire that has burned an area roughly the size of Singapore,” he told Australia’s national broadcaster ABC. The intensity of the fire is under control. But it will take time to bring the Grampians’ blaze, which is more than 360km in size, under control.
According to the authorities, although the homestead was damaged in the fire, no loss of life has been received so far.
