North Korea Launches Historic Party Congress Amid Global Scrutiny

Pyongyang – North Korea’s ruling party has commenced a historic political congress, held every five years, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s governance and strategic direction. State media reported the opening on Friday, noting that the high-profile gathering could include announcements regarding the next phase of Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons program.

At the start of the congress, Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un delivered the keynote address, outlining the party’s agenda. The Workers’ Party of Korea traditionally uses this quinquennial event to issue directives on all aspects of state affairs, ranging from housing development to military strategy.

The congress is being held at Pyongyang’s massive House of Culture, with the nation’s top leaders in attendance. It is typically concluded with elaborate military parades and displays of the latest weaponry, showcasing the regime’s strategic capabilities to both domestic and international audiences.

The world is closely watching the proceedings, as North Korea remains one of the most secretive states on the planet. Analysts view the congress as a rare window into the country’s internal decision-making and Kim Jong Un’s long-term vision.

According to state media, Kim stated that since the last congress in 2021, North Korea has “overcome its most difficult period” and is now entering a new stage of “hope and confidence” for the future. He emphasized that the party faces a “historic duty” to enhance economic development and improve the quality of life for its people, with the goal of rapidly transforming every aspect of state and social life.

Kim has previously indicated that the congress will unveil specific plans to advance North Korea’s nuclear capabilities. The country has not conducted a nuclear test in over eight years, but scientists have reportedly continued work on deployable, high-yield, miniaturized nuclear warheads and long-range missiles.

Yang Mu-jin, former president of North Korean Studies University, told AFP that years of Western sanctions have challenged the country’s economy due to its nuclear program. Nonetheless, Kim is expected to highlight both North Korea’s nuclear advancements and its strengthened ties with China and Russia with pride during the congress.
