India Criticizes Israel’s West Bank Actions Ahead of PM Modi’s Visit

Despite its long-standing strategic partnership with Israel, India has sharply criticized the Netanyahu government’s latest push to formalize control over parts of the West Bank. Just days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Israel, New Delhi joined a joint statement condemning Israeli actions that, it said, violate international law.

The joint communiqué rejected “any attempt to alter the demographic composition, character, or status of the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem.” The signatory states described Israel’s moves as a threat to regional peace, warning that unilateral measures would undermine ongoing efforts to ensure stability.

Prime Minister Modi is expected to travel to Israel next week, where he is likely to address the Knesset as part of his bilateral engagements. India’s decision to endorse the statement is being viewed by analysts as an example of New Delhi’s balanced diplomatic posture, attempting to maintain close ties with Israel while upholding its long-standing foreign policy positions.

India and Israel share deep cooperation in defense, agriculture, and high technology. However, New Delhi has historically supported a two-state solution, a position that has remained unchanged under Modi’s leadership, particularly regarding the status of the West Bank.

Earlier, members of the UN Security Council had called for the consolidation of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza. Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump recently urged the creation of an international “peace force” for Gaza—an initiative that has since taken shape as the “Board of Peace.” Trump wrote to Prime Minister Modi inviting India to join the platform, though India has not yet made a decision. The Ministry of External Affairs said the proposal is still under review.
