A cultural exchange and commemorative event marking the 55th anniversary of China–U.S. Ping-Pong Diplomacy was held on 3 February (U.S. local time) in Tacoma, United States.
The event was jointly organized by the China Media Group (CMG), the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, and the Chinese Table Tennis Association. Video remarks were delivered by Shen Haixiong, President of CMG; Xie Feng, Chinese Ambassador to the United States; Yang Wanming, President of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries; and Wang Liqin, Chairman of the Chinese Table Tennis Association. Zhang Jianmin, Chinese Consul General in San Francisco, attended the event in person and addressed the gathering. More than 500 guests were present.
Shen Haixiong stated, “Friendship between nations depends on closeness between their peoples, and such closeness is rooted in mutual understanding of the heart.” Fifty-five years ago, a small ping-pong ball opened the door to emotional connection between the peoples of China and the United States. Ten years ago, during his visit to the U.S., President Xi Jinping encouraged American youth at Lincoln Middle School to visit China—instilling confidence and vitality in China–U.S. friendship. He noted, “The hope of China–U.S. relations lies with the people, and its future rests with the youth.” Shen called upon all to continue creating inspiring stories of people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.
Ambassador Xie Feng expressed hope that under the strategic guidance of the leaders of both countries—based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, cooperation, and win–win principles—China and the United States would further advance their bilateral relations. Such progress, he said, would enhance the well-being of both peoples and contribute greater certainty and positive energy to the world.
