The Palestinian Embassy was formally inaugurated in London on Monday, marking a significant diplomatic milestone following the United Kingdom’s official recognition of the State of Palestine.
The opening ceremony took place outside the former Palestinian Mission office in west London, which has now been upgraded to a full embassy with complete diplomatic status and privileges. Describing the occasion as a “profound milestone” in British-Palestinian relations, Palestinian Ambassador to the UK Husam Zomlot said the move represented far more than a symbolic change.
“We are witnessing a historic moment today — the opening of the Embassy of the State of Palestine in the United Kingdom, with full diplomatic status and privileges,” Zomlot said while addressing attendees. Draped in a black-and-white keffiyeh scarf, he stressed that the development was “not merely a change of name,” but a decisive shift in the long journey toward Palestinian statehood.
The embassy’s inauguration follows the UK government’s announcement in September 2025 recognizing the State of Palestine. Several other countries, including Australia and Canada, took similar steps at the time, amid escalating international concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
“This is how remarkably we begin the new year,” Zomlot said. “A deep milestone in British-Palestinian relations and a new chapter in the Palestinian people’s long struggle for freedom and self-determination. This is a day of hope, a day of resilience, and a reminder to the world that peace is not only possible — it is inevitable.”
Speaking after Zomlot on a stage adorned with Palestinian and British flags, UK diplomatic representative Alistair Harrison described the embassy’s opening as “a moment of hope.”
The UK Foreign Office did not immediately confirm whether Britain plans to open its own embassy in the Palestinian territories.
The event underscores a notable shift in international diplomacy concerning Palestine and highlights growing global engagement with the Palestinian quest for statehood.
