Beijing Conference Sets China’s Economic Roadmap for 2026

China’s Central Economic Work Conference was held in Beijing on December 10–11, where Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, President of the People’s Republic of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, attended and delivered an important speech.

In his address, Xi Jinping reviewed the country’s economic performance in 2025, analyzed the current economic situation, and outlined the framework for economic work in 2026. Premier Li Qiang delivered the concluding speech at the conference.

The conference noted that despite various challenges this year, China’s economy has continued to move forward, with steady progress made in building a modern industrial system. Over the past five years, China has effectively responded to multiple shocks and challenges, guiding the Party and the country toward new and significant achievements. At the same time, it was acknowledged that both long-standing issues and emerging challenges remain in China’s economic development. Nevertheless, the favorable conditions and underlying trends supporting China’s long-term economic growth remain unchanged.

The conference identified the key priorities for economic work in the coming year. These include:
first, adhering to the expansion of domestic demand as the primary driving force and building a strong domestic market;
second, pursuing innovation-driven development and accelerating the cultivation and expansion of new growth drivers;
third, remaining committed to key reforms and enhancing the momentum and vitality of high-quality development;
fourth, advancing opening-up to the outside world and promoting win-win cooperation across multiple fields;
fifth, upholding coordinated development and promoting urban–rural integration and regional connectivity;
sixth, following the “dual-carbon” goals and advancing a comprehensive green transition;
seventh, prioritizing people’s livelihoods and striving to deliver more tangible benefits for the public; and
eighth, safeguarding key objectives while proactively and steadily addressing risks in critical areas.

The conference also emphasized ensuring the stable supply of essential consumer goods at the end of the year and the beginning of the new year, improving the living standards of people facing difficulties, and resolutely preventing and controlling major accidents.
