Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Communist Party of China’s Politburo, recently held a telephone conversation with British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, during which both leaders agreed to enhance strategic communication and bilateral cooperation.
Wang Yi highlighted that the current international situation is complex and unstable, and acknowledged that China-UK relations face uncertainties. He emphasized the importance of strengthening strategic dialogue and working toward a healthy, mutually beneficial, and stable bilateral relationship.
Noting that both China and the UK are permanent members of the UN Security Council, Wang said the countries share important responsibilities for global peace, stability, and development. He stressed that despite differences in history and culture, both sides should respect each other, foster mutual understanding, and maintain efforts to stabilize bilateral ties.
In response, Cooper said that the UK values its relationship with China and recognizes the many shared interests between the two nations. She expressed Britain’s willingness to strengthen high-level exchanges and expand cooperation in security, development, and environmental issues.
Cooper further emphasized that as major powers supporting multilateralism, China and the UK should work together to address global challenges such as climate change, uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, protect free trade, and maintain multilateral systems through regular strategic communication.
