U.S. Role Questioned in South China Sea Issue: Beijing

Commenting on the recent U.S. statement regarding the South China Sea, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Qian said that China has made its firm position clear on the matter. He stated that China’s actions are legitimate measures to safeguard its lawful rights and interests. China will continue to firmly defend its territorial sovereignty and maritime interests, and will seek to resolve maritime disputes peacefully through direct negotiations with relevant countries. “Any threats or provocations are futile and will ultimately fail,” Lin said at a regular press briefing in Beijing on Wednesday.

Lin further emphasized that evidence shows the Philippines was the first to provoke, creating maritime tensions and undermining regional stability. “The United States has ignored the facts, smeared China’s legitimate actions, and attempted to threaten China through the U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty,” he said. “This once again exposes Washington’s deliberate attempt to stir up confrontation and destabilize the South China Sea region.”

He added that the United States itself is the biggest source of risk to regional stability.
