At Least 39 Dead, 11 Missing in Nepal Floods and Landslides

At least 39 people have been killed and 11 others remain missing following days of heavy rainfall that triggered floods and landslides across Nepal, according to the country’s police headquarters, The Kathmandu Post reported.

The disaster, which began on Friday (October 3), has caused the highest number of casualties in Koshi Province, where 36 people were confirmed dead. Three more fatalities were reported in Madhesh Province, while 13 others have sustained injuries nationwide.

In Ilam district alone, 27 people lost their lives in a devastating landslide, with five others still unaccounted for. Two people were killed and one injured in Udayapur due to flooding and landslides. In Khotang, lightning strikes claimed one life and injured three others, while two people were injured in a similar incident in Bhojpur.

Elsewhere, a road accident in Panchthar left six people dead and six injured. In Madhesh Province’s Ranirhat area, lightning strikes killed three people. One fatality was also reported in Bara, four in Rasuwa, and another in Kathmandu Valley, where a person was swept away by floodwaters. One person in Makwanpur was reported injured by lightning.

Authorities have warned that continuous heavy rainfall could cause further damage and landslides in the coming days. Residents, particularly in hilly regions, have been advised to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.
