San Marino, one of Europe’s smallest nations, has formally recognized Palestine as an independent and sovereign state. The announcement was made on Saturday during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York by San Marino’s Foreign Minister Luca Beccari.
Beccari stated that, in line with UN resolutions, San Marino recognizes Palestine within secure and internationally recognized borders as a sovereign and independent state. He further emphasized that the establishment of a state is the fundamental and inalienable right of the Palestinian people.
This move follows a growing wave of international recognition of Palestine’s statehood. Recently, several Western nations, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Portugal, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, Andorra, and Monaco, extended formal recognition at a global conference co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia.
Earlier this year, on March 20, Mexico also recognized Palestine as an independent state. San Marino’s decision is expected to further strengthen Palestine’s international standing and bolster its ongoing struggle for statehood.
