Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has warned that Japan will take strict measures if Israel obstructs the implementation of a two-state solution in the Al-Aqsa region.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Ishiba said, “Japan has not yet officially recognized Palestine, but it is only a matter of time. The Japanese people support a two-state solution, and we will recognize Palestine at the right moment.”
He added that senior Israeli officials have repeatedly rejected proposals for a two-state solution and the creation of an independent Palestinian state, angering the Japanese public. “If Israel blocks the path to peace in the future, Japan will respond decisively,” he stressed.
Last Monday, France and Saudi Arabia held a global conference calling for the recognition of Palestine as an independent sovereign state and the implementation of the two-state solution. Several countries—including France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the UK, Canada, Australia, and Portugal—have already recognized Palestine. Japan was ready to follow suit but delayed due to objections from the United States.
Currently, around 80% of UN member states recognize Palestine as an independent sovereign nation.
