Beijing is set to once again become the global stage for advancing women’s empowerment, as the city prepares to host the World Women’s Summit on the 30th anniversary of the landmark Fourth World Conference on Women.
At a press briefing on September 22, Ku Jia Kun, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted details from a newly released white paper titled “China’s Practices and Achievements in Promoting Women’s All-Round Development in the New Era”, published by the State Council Information Office.
“Thirty years ago, the Fourth World Conference on Women was successfully held in Beijing. To commemorate the event and promote the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the Chinese government and UN Women jointly organized a global summit on women’s issues at the UN headquarters in New York ten years ago. Five years ago, President Xi Jinping proposed holding another World Women’s Summit in 2025,” Ku stated.
With only five years remaining to achieve the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, women around the world face both daunting challenges and unprecedented opportunities. Ku emphasized that China has long been both a supporter and practitioner of gender equality and women’s all-round development. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, women’s development in the country has made historic achievements and advanced on all fronts.
On the eve of the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Conference, the upcoming summit in Beijing will highlight China’s major achievements in implementing the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The newly published white paper systematically presents China’s concepts, policies, innovative practices, and exemplary spirit in promoting gender equality in the new era. It also shares Chinese experience and wisdom with the international community.
“China is ready to work hand in hand with all countries to accelerate new processes for women’s all-round development and to write a new chapter for the advancement of women’s interests worldwide,” Ku added.
