Cholera Outbreak in Chad Refugee Camp Claims 68 Lives

At least 68 people have died in a cholera outbreak at a refugee camp in Chad. The country’s Ministry of Health reported that the outbreak began in late July.

Since April 2023, over 850,000 refugees fleeing Sudan’s civil war have sought shelter in Chad, many of whom are living in unsanitary conditions with limited access to safe drinking water. According to the United Nations, these conditions have accelerated the spread of cholera.

Data from Chad’s Ministry of Health indicates that by 26 August, more than 1,000 cholera cases had been recorded in the Dogui camp. Doctors have warned that without prompt treatment, the disease can become fatal within hours.

According to Doctors Without Borders, Sudan is currently the most affected country by cholera, with over 2,400 deaths reported this year alone.
