Denmark has summoned a U.S. diplomat over allegations of secret activities by American citizens in Greenland. The Danish Foreign Ministry confirmed that the diplomat has been called to Copenhagen.
According to Danish broadcaster DR, the accused individuals are reportedly attempting to socially infiltrate Greenland and detach the territory from Denmark, bringing it under U.S. influence. Intelligence agencies have also warned the government about these activities.
Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated that foreign interference in Denmark’s internal affairs is unacceptable, which prompted the summoning of the U.S. chargé d’affaires.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to separate Greenland from Denmark, and Vice President J.D. Vance has criticized Copenhagen for not investing sufficiently in the region.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen recently warned that no country can claim another by force. The Foreign Ministry added that it remains fully aware of foreign interests in both Greenland and Denmark.
Although Denmark is a long-standing close ally of the United States and a member of NATO and the European Union, remarks from the Trump administration regarding Greenland have caused surprise in Copenhagen.
