Trump Administration Cancels Visas of Over 6,000 International Students

The Trump administration has revoked visas of more than 6,000 international students based on multiple allegations. According to the U.S. State Department, these visas were primarily canceled due to legal violations, expired visas, and other offenses.

Reports indicate that most of the visa holders were involved in various crimes, such as assault, driving under the influence, and theft. Additionally, some faced allegations of “supporting terrorism” and, in certain cases, anti-Semitic behavior.

This action by the Trump administration is part of a stricter immigration policy and increased monitoring of international students. However, the State Department did not clarify the exact meaning of “supporting terrorism.”

Visa processes for international students have become increasingly stringent in recent years. In June of this year, when in-person interviews resumed, applicants were required to provide access to their social media accounts. Authorities monitor posts to ensure that students are not involved in any form of hate activity or security threat.

In May, while addressing the U.S. Congress, Senator Marco Rubio stated that thousands of student visas had been revoked since January. He remarked, “Those who come as guests but cause disruption in educational institutions will have their visas canceled.”

Democrats have criticized the Trump administration’s decision, viewing it as an infringement on students’ legal rights. According to the organization Open Doors, more than 1.1 million international students from over 210 countries were enrolled in U.S. institutions for the 2023–24 academic year.
