Greta Thunberg and Activists Block Norwegian Oil Refinery

Nearly 200 environmental and human rights activists, including climate activist Greta Thunberg, have blocked the Mongstad oil refinery in Bergen, Norway, demanding an end to the country’s oil industry.

Representatives of the Extinction Rebellion group stated that the oil industry has no future and that burning fossil fuels has increased carbon emissions in the environment. Thunberg said, “Norway’s oil production is stained with blood, which is why we have taken this stand.”

The activists announced plans to continue protests across various locations in Norway throughout the coming week. The Mongstad refinery is operated by the Norwegian company Equinor. Norway, being Europe’s largest oil and gas producer, often faces criticism for its fossil fuel activities.

Government officials argued that the oil industry provides employment opportunities and ensures energy supply across Europe. Equinor has stated that it plans to produce 1.2 million barrels of oil and 40 billion cubic meters of gas per day until 2035.
