Nigeria Boat Capsizes in Sokoto During Rainy Season: 10 Rescued, 40 Missing

At least 40 people remain missing after a boat capsized in Nigeria’s northwestern state of Sokoto, authorities said on Sunday. Rescue teams are continuing their search efforts, according to Reuters.

In a statement, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that the boat was carrying more than 50 passengers when it sank on Sunday morning. So far, 10 people have been rescued, while about 40 others are still unaccounted for.

Boat accidents are common in Nigeria, often linked to poor safety standards and overcrowding. Such incidents occur most frequently during the rainy season. In August 2024, at least 16 farmers were killed in a boat accident in Sokoto State. Just two days ago, 13 people died in separate boat mishaps in central Nigeria.
