Following a devastating earthquake in Russia, tsunami warnings have been issued for three countries in the Oceania region: Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu.
The warnings were issued by the United States’ weather authorities.
According to the reports, the earthquake that struck Russia measured 8.8 on the Richter scale. After the quake, tsunami alerts were announced not only in the U.S. and Japan but also in several other countries.
Citing a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Papua New Guinea, media sources say that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued tsunami threat alerts on Wednesday for Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu.
The U.S. Embassy has warned American citizens in the region:
“If you are in coastal areas and observe unusual sea currents or feel strong, prolonged shaking, evacuate immediately to higher ground.”
The alert further advised:
“Until further notice, avoid coastal zones, beaches, and riverbanks. Prepare essential supplies such as food, water, medication, and important documents for emergency use.”
As of the time of this report, countries under tsunami alerts due to the earthquake include Russia, Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, China, Hawaii, Guam, California, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, and New Zealand.
