Nov. 8 — Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi scripted Major League Soccer history on Sunday, becoming the first player in the league’s annals to secure the MLS Golden Boot in consecutive seasons after tallying 26 goals in 31 appearances across the 2026 regular season campaign.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner successfully retained the individual scoring crown he captured during the 2025 campaign, when he recorded 29 goals in 28 matches. While five distinguished players in MLS history previously achieved multiple Golden Boot distinctions, none had ever accomplished the feat in back-to-back years. Messi finished comfortably clear of his nearest challengers on the scoring leaderboard, with FC Dallas striker Petar Musa finishing second with 22 goals and Nashville SC forward Sam Surridge placing third with 21.
Beyond his finishing prowess, the Argentine playmaker demonstrated comprehensive offensive command across the campaign. Messi distributed 17 assists in 2026—combining with his 26 goals to produce a league-leading 43 direct goal contributions. The playmaker also topped the assist charts in the preceding season with 19 helpers.
Inter Miami concluded their regular season slate on Sunday with a 3-3 draw against Charlotte FC. Despite establishing a commanding 3-0 cushion during the opening half, Miami conceded three unanswered strikes to split the points. Although Messi was held off the scoresheet in the finale, his set-piece deliveries proved pivotal, directly generating the corner kicks that yielded Miami’s first two goals.
The result confirmed Inter Miami’s second-place finish in the Eastern Conference standings on 60 points, guaranteeing home-field advantage for Round One of the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. The Herons are set to contest a best-of-three series against seventh-seeded Columbus Crew.
With the scoring title secured, Messi stands on the verge of another historic milestone. Having been named the Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2024 and 2025, Messi enters post-season voting as the frontrunner for the award. A third consecutive MVP selection would mark another unprecedented record in Major League Soccer history.
