Bangladesh and Japan Ink Seven Bilateral Accords to Strengthen Strategic and Economic Ties

TOKYO, Oct. 28 — Bangladesh and Japan on Wednesday concluded seven bilateral instruments—comprising four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), two grant agreements, and a Letter of Intent (LoI)—aimed at broadening economic cooperation, expediting infrastructure support, and elevating bilateral relations to an advanced strategic level.

The signing ceremony took place in Tokyo on the third day of Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s four-day state visit to Japan, undertaken at the official invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

The accords are designed to deepen multi-sectoral collaboration, particularly in bilateral trade expansion, direct investment facilitation, industrial modernization, and development grant financing. Representatives from both governments signed the documents in the presence of senior diplomatic and administrative officials.

Prime Minister Rahman arrived in Tokyo on Monday, October 26, heading a high-powered delegation that includes Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir, and the Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), alongside prominent business and institutional stakeholders.

The formalization of these agreements marks a tangible deliverable of the summit-level engagements, reinforcing Japan’s longstanding role as one of Bangladesh’s primary development and financing partners as Dhaka seeks expanded Japanese investment in its manufacturing, technology, and economic corridor initiatives.
