15 September :Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will travel to China on Wednesday, 16 September, for talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing.
China’s Foreign Ministry said the meeting between Wang and Araghchi would take place in the Chinese capital on Wednesday. The visit comes as the Iran-Israel-United States war continues to drag on, with its repercussions spreading across the global economy.
Qatar-based media outlet Al Jazeera reported that China has been attempting to mediate efforts to end the ongoing war. The upcoming meeting is expected to address the latest developments in the conflict and possible ways to bring the hostilities to an end.
Wang Yi and Araghchi previously met in July. More recently, the two foreign ministers were seen holding brief discussions on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi.
China is one of the largest buyers of oil from Iran and the wider Middle East. Any disruption to oil supplies caused by the deadlock in the Strait of Hormuz and a US naval blockade could therefore have a negative impact on the Chinese economy.
Against this backdrop, Araghchi’s visit to China is drawing particular attention. The talks are expected to focus on the war, security in the Strait of Hormuz and the growing crisis in the global economy, with the possibility of important decisions emerging from the meeting.
