Comments made by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt regarding the younger generation in the United States have triggered widespread controversy.
Leavitt suggested that a significant portion of Generation Z has become “lazy” and argued that liberal education and ideology have weakened their work ethic. She further remarked that young people who frequently complain about economic conditions in the United States should be sent to countries such as Cuba or Iran, where, according to her, they would come to better appreciate life in America.
Speaking on Fox News host Jesse Watters’ program, Leavitt said that critics of the U.S. economy would quickly reconsider their views if they spent time in countries like Cuba or Iran, adding that firsthand exposure to harsher realities would help them understand the value of American opportunities.
During the interview, the host raised a question about whether declining work culture among young people is linked to laziness and the influence of liberal educators and academics. Leavitt agreed with both factors, stating that they have played a significant role. She argued that many in the current generation have grown up with easy access to various privileges.
The 28-year-old press secretary, herself a member of Generation Z, said she believes many young Americans have become accustomed to a culture of instant gratification rather than hard work. She emphasized that the United States was built on the values of merit, perseverance, and self-made success, which she said must be preserved.
Leavitt also commented on parents who choose homeschooling or Christian educational institutions, saying such decisions often reflect a desire to shield children from certain political ideologies. She praised such parents for keeping their children away from what she described as communist and liberal influences.
At one point during the interview, the host jokingly suggested sending unruly young people to the military. In response, Leavitt said that sending them to Cuba or Iran would likely make them quickly reconsider their views and wish to return to the United States.
The discussion also touched on recent primary election victories of several young left-leaning Democratic candidates, whom former President Donald Trump had previously described as “communists.”
Following Leavitt’s remarks, social media platforms saw a wave of criticism. Analysts argued that she failed to adequately consider the economic realities and struggles facing young Americans. Critics pointed to rising housing costs, student debt burdens, and a highly competitive job market, which have forced many young adults to continue living with their parents.
Meanwhile, some social media users called for a political response through upcoming elections, while others accused Leavitt of being disconnected from the lived experiences of working-class families and young people.
