Tensions Rise in Lebanon Over Alleged Damage to Religious Symbol, IDF Launches Investigation

Tensions have resurfaced in southern Lebanon following the circulation of a controversial image shortly after a ceasefire with Hezbollah came into effect. The image allegedly shows an Israeli soldier striking a religious statue, and it quickly went viral on social media, triggering widespread condemnation. The incident is reported to have taken place in Debl village in southern Lebanon, an area with a significant Christian population. Following the emergence of the image, criticism mounted internationally, with many voices expressing concern over an alleged attack on religious sentiments. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that an internal investigation has been initiated into the matter, emphasizing that the incident is being treated with utmost seriousness. The military also indicated that efforts are underway to coordinate with local communities to restore the damaged religious symbol. Separately, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar both condemned the incident. Netanyahu described it as a “deeply regrettable event” and pledged strict disciplinary action against those responsible. Sa’ar went further, issuing an apology to Christians worldwide and stressing that such conduct does not reflect Israel’s official values. U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee welcomed the swift response from the Israeli government, noting the importance of accountability in such sensitive matters. Meanwhile, observers caution that despite the recent ceasefire, the situation in southern Lebanon remains fragile and not yet fully stabilized.
