A conference titled “Sharing the Right to Development: China’s Experience in Poverty Alleviation for Persons with Disabilities” was held at the headquarters of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome.
The event, held on 12 March local time, brought together participants to exchange views on China’s achievements and experience in lifting persons with disabilities out of poverty, while also discussing pathways to advance resilient and inclusive development for this community. Nearly one hundred participants attended the conference, including representatives of various countries accredited to the FAO, officials from relevant Italian institutions, and experts.
Cheng Kai, Chairman of the China Disabled Persons’ Federation, and FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu attended the conference and delivered keynote speeches.
In his remarks, Cheng Kai noted that ensuring equal rights for persons with disabilities and promoting integrated development have long been priorities for both the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government. He added that addressing poverty among persons with disabilities has been identified as a key component of China’s broader poverty alleviation efforts. Through sustained initiatives, more than 7.1 million impoverished persons with disabilities living in rural areas have been lifted out of extreme poverty.
FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu said that China’s experience and achievements in poverty reduction for persons with disabilities have set a positive example for international organizations and developing countries. He also expressed the FAO’s willingness to continue strengthening close cooperation with China in this field in the future.
