Zelensky Arrives in France to Finalize Major Air Defense and Fighter Jet Agreements

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in France on Monday to finalize key agreements with the French president regarding air defense systems, fighter jets, and missile supplies. The primary goal of the visit is to strengthen Ukraine’s long-term wartime capabilities as Russian attacks continue to escalate rapidly.

President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Zelensky with an embrace upon his arrival at the Villacoublay Air Base.
In a post on X on Sunday, Zelensky said a “historic agreement” on military aviation with France is ready, adding that it will significantly bolster Ukraine’s fighter jet fleet and air defense capabilities.

The French government has been discussing options for increased support to Ukraine in recent weeks. Despite facing political and budgetary challenges, France is seeking ways to provide additional assistance.

According to sources, the visit may include major announcements for Ukraine, including indications of supplying Rafale multirole jets, a 10-year strategic aviation agreement, Aster 30 surface-to-air missiles, and additional Mirage fighter aircraft. A Rafale jet was placed on display in front of the French and Ukrainian flags at the Villacoublay base.

In the long term, Ukraine plans to build a full fleet of 250 fighter aircraft, potentially comprising U.S. F-16s, Swedish Gripens, and French Rafales. Operating such advanced jets will require extensive training for Ukrainian pilots.

Russia has recently claimed advances in the Zaporizhzhia region and has intensified drone and missile strikes across Ukraine—making the question of French assistance increasingly urgent.
