Wind and Solar Energy Emerge as China’s Primary Sources of New Power Generation

According to data released by the China Electricity Council (CEC) on Monday, 3 February, China’s newly installed power generation capacity reached 550 million kilowatts in 2025. Of this, newly added wind and solar capacity accounted for 440 million kilowatts, representing 80.2 percent of the total new installations.

Statistics show that 97.1 percent of all newly added electricity consumption now comes from wind, solar, and biomass power, making renewable energy the dominant source of new power usage in China. The country’s capacity to supply green electricity continues to expand rapidly, accelerating the environmental and low-carbon transformation of its energy and power sectors.

The China Electricity Council forecasts that by 2026, China’s installed solar power capacity will surpass coal-fired power for the first time. By the end of the same year, the combined installed capacity of wind and solar power is expected to account for half of the nation’s total power generation capacity.
