United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on Nigeria to strengthen Africa’s representation on the global stage, emphasizing the country’s unique position to provide leadership during a period of shifting world order. Speaking during a meeting with Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima on the sidelines of the 39th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa on Saturday, Guterres also expressed his public support for Nigeria’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
“Given its large population, democratic continuity, strong natural and human resources, and commitment to multilateralism, Nigeria is well-placed to play a pivotal role in global affairs,” Guterres said. He commended the current Nigerian government for its economic reforms, highlighting initiatives launched under President Bola Tinubu’s administration as steps that could stabilize and strengthen the country’s economy in the long term.
Guterres further noted that Nigeria’s influence extends beyond its borders. Despite internal security challenges, the country actively contributes to regional stability, particularly in the Sahel region and among West African states, showcasing its capacity for leadership at the continental level.
Vice President Shettima praised Guterres’ initiatives on global peace and sustainable development, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to deepening its cooperation with the United Nations. He also highlighted a pressing political issue: the need for comprehensive UN reform to reflect contemporary global realities, including enhanced African representation in the Security Council, with Nigeria positioned as a permanent member.
