UN Ready to Support Bangladesh’s Reform Goals

Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has expressed the United Nations’ full readiness to assist Bangladesh in achieving fundamental changes. In a video message released on the anniversary of the July uprising, he paid tribute to the protesters who sacrificed their lives for a new future of the country.

Volker Türk stated, “Now is the time for Bangladesh to commit itself to these fundamental changes. The United Nations stands ready to support both the government and the people in realizing this goal.”

He further highlighted that a year ago, the people of Bangladesh took to the streets to protest against inequality, injustice, and oppression. This movement represented a call for a just and inclusive society. Notably, the youth and students played a leading role in the protests.

During his visit to Bangladesh last year, he met with these young activists and conveyed his respect to those who were injured or lost their lives during the July uprising.

The United Nations’ stance is seen as a significant support for Bangladesh’s democratic and human rights processes.
