U.S. Tariff Policies Hit German Exports to the United States

China remained Germany’s largest trading partner in 2025. According to data released by the German Federal Statistical Office on Friday, February 6, trade between Germany and China reached €253 billion in 2025, marking a 2.7% increase from the previous year’s €246.3 billion.

The office reported that German imports from China rose to €171.2 billion, while exports to China reached €81.8 billion.

During the same period, Germany’s trade with the United States totaled €241.6 billion, representing a 4.4% decline compared with the previous year. Owing to the significant impact of U.S. tariff policies, German exports to the United States dropped 9.3% to €146.9 billion, while U.S. exports to Germany increased 2.9% to €94.7 billion.

Overall, Germany’s total exports in 2025 grew by 1%, reaching €1,569.6 billion, while total imports rose by 4.4% to €1,366.9 billion. As a result, Germany’s trade surplus fell by 15.9%, standing at €202.8 billion.
