Kim Aris, the son of Myanmar’s imprisoned pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, has expressed grave concern over her deteriorating health. He revealed that the 80-year-old Nobel laureate is seriously ill, with worsening heart problems that require urgent medical attention.
In an interview with Reuters from London, Aris said: “Without proper medical examinations, it is impossible to know the true condition of my mother’s heart. I am extremely worried. I don’t even have a way to confirm if she is still alive.”
He urged Myanmar’s military junta to immediately grant Suu Kyi access to appropriate medical care, particularly treatment by an independent and experienced cardiologist.
Suu Kyi has been held in solitary confinement since the February 2021 military coup and is serving a 33-year prison sentence on charges widely regarded as politically motivated.
Aris appealed to the international community to act swiftly to save his mother’s life and to secure her release. Several global human rights organizations have already voiced serious alarm over her inhumane detention conditions.
