A protest was held in Brisbane, Australia, to honor journalists killed in Gaza. On Sunday, over 400 people gathered in the South Bank area in front of the offices of the national broadcaster, ABC.
The demonstration, titled “ABC Stop Silencing Palestine Rally and March,” was organized by the local group Justice for Palestine Magan-Dojin. Many participants wore vests labeled “Press,” displaying the names of the journalists who lost their lives. Additionally, one protester handed a list of the deceased journalists to ABC officials.
Speakers at the event accused media outlets of failing to adequately cover the war. They claimed that Israel deliberately obstructs journalists from entering Gaza and specifically targets Palestinian reporters. According to the organization, more than 270 Palestinian journalists have been killed since the war began in October 2023, a number far exceeding the journalist casualties of World War II.
The protest also highlighted the dismissal of ABC employee Antoinette Lattouf. Lattouf was fired in December 2023 after posting about the Gaza conflict on social media. Although a court ruled in June this year that her dismissal was unjust, the organization criticized ABC for limiting employees’ freedom of expression on personal platforms.
Protesters emphasized that, as one of the country’s largest public broadcasters with a billion-dollar annual budget, ABC should encourage independent journalism. Instead, they accused the broadcaster of silencing journalists and showing bias toward Israeli narratives.
