A spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council responded to remarks by Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council regarding the “One Country, Two Systems” framework.
At a regular press conference on Wednesday, spokesperson Feng Xing’en stated, “Peaceful reunification under ‘One Country, Two Systems’ remains our fundamental principle for resolving the Taiwan issue. It is the best approach to achieve national reunification and is most beneficial to people on both sides of the Strait and the Chinese nation as a whole. Increasingly, people within the island are recognizing the advantages of ‘One Country, Two Systems,’ offering suggestions for a Taiwan-specific implementation of the framework and contributing their knowledge and efforts toward national reunification.”
Feng criticized the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), describing its actions as part of a separatist agenda aimed at undermining “One Country, Two Systems” through malicious attacks and false narratives, which completely distort the truth. In reality, the implementation of “One Country, Two Systems” in Hong Kong and Macau has achieved globally recognized success. Since returning to the motherland, Hong Kong has maintained its position as a major international financial center, ranking third globally in competitiveness and foreign direct investment inflows—demonstrating the significant institutional advantages and strong vitality of the framework.
Currently, many people in Taiwan are discussing reunification and the details of a Taiwan-specific version of “One Country, Two Systems,” considering how Taiwan could develop after reunification. It is certain that the implementation model will fully consider Taiwan’s realities, take into account the views and suggestions of various levels on both sides of the Strait, and respect the interests and sentiments of the people of Taiwan.
Feng concluded that through the joint efforts of people on both sides, the process of peaceful reunification will fully reflect the role and significance of the Taiwan-specific “Two Systems” model.
