Nobel Laureates Call for Ceasefire and Humanitarian Aid in Gaza

Leading scientists worldwide have voiced urgent concern over the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza. In an open letter to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, they described the situation as “unbearable” and called for an immediate ceasefire and the provision of humanitarian assistance.

The letter states that an artificially induced food crisis has created near-famine conditions in Gaza. Healthcare systems have collapsed, children’s education has been disrupted, and civilian infrastructure—including hospitals and universities—is being deliberately destroyed, depriving ordinary people of their basic rights.

More than 4,000 scientists signed the letter, including 14 Nobel laureates, five Fields Medal winners, 20 Breakthrough Prize recipients, 34 Dirac Prize winners, and four Wolf Prize laureates. Among the Nobel laureates are physicists Gerard ’t Hooft, David Politzer, Takaki Kajita, and Giorgio Parisi, as well as mathematician Roger Penrose.

The scientists emphasized: “There is no precedent in history that can justify the current suffering of Gaza’s civilian population.” While urging an immediate halt to the crisis in Gaza, the letter also condemned the Hamas attacks and hostage-taking of October 2023 and demanded the immediate release of all detainees.

According to international analysts, the unified stance of so many prominent scientists has drawn unprecedented global attention to the Gaza crisis. They assert that the international community has a moral responsibility to ensure a ceasefire and deliver humanitarian aid without delay.
