New Governor of Bangladesh Bank

After the fall of the Awami League government, the interim government decided to appoint a new governor of the central bank when the governor Abdur Rauf Talukder resigned on August 9.

Ahsan H. Mansoor, 72, currently serves as the executive director of the think tank Policy Research Institute (PRI).

Earlier he held various important positions in the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He is well known as an analyst of the country’s financial sector.

It is to be noted that on August 9, former governor Abdur Rauf Talukder sent his resignation letter virtually to the relevant official of the Ministry of Finance. Abdur Rauf Talukder resigned citing health reasons.

Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister in the face of popular uprising four days after leaving Bangladesh. Earlier, hundreds of central bank officials protested demanding Abdur Rauf Talukder’s resignation.

Since the resignation of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, the Governor of Bangladesh Bank has been absent from his office. After that, four deputy governors, the head of BFIU and the banking adviser of the central bank were forced to resign in the face of widespread agitation from last August 7.

Later, Deputy Governor Nurun Nahar was appointed as Acting Governor of Bangladesh Bank until a new Governor was appointed.
