Israel has carried out a series of deadly attacks across the Gaza Strip, killing at least 23 Palestinians on Wednesday—its largest assault since the so-called ceasefire took effect last October. The latest strikes have once again underscored the fragile nature of the truce and the continuing toll on civilians.
According to medical sources cited by Al Jazeera, several children are among the dead. At least 14 people were killed in Israeli shelling in Gaza City’s Tuffah and Zeitoun neighborhoods. In the southern region of Khan Younis, four more people were reported killed when Israeli forces struck tents sheltering displaced families in the Kizan Abu Rishwan area.
Two others were killed in an airstrike on the coastal tent encampment of Al-Mawasi. The Palestinian Red Crescent Society confirmed that one of the victims was emergency responder Hussein Hasan Hussein al-Sumairi.
The Israeli military said the strikes were carried out after one of its reserve officers was seriously wounded by gunfire in northern Gaza. The incident reportedly occurred during a routine operation near the so-called “Yellow Line.”
Despite the ceasefire announced nearly four months ago, Israeli operations have continued. Since that period began, more than 520 Palestinians have been killed in renewed Israeli attacks, according to Gaza health authorities.
Since the start of Israel’s military campaign on 7 October 2023, at least 71,803 Palestinians have been reported killed.
