Israel on Tuesday approved a US-brokered ceasefire deal with Lebanon’s Hezbollah. As a result, the ground has been prepared for the end of the war in the Gaza Strip which has been going on for about 14 months.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Israel’s Security Council approved the ceasefire after he presented it.
In Washington, US President Joe Biden called the deal “good news” and said his administration would press for a cease-fire in Gaza again.
Israel-Hezbollah’s ceasefire is the first important step in de-escalating the unrest that has spread throughout the region since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. But that does not address the deadly war in Gaza.
Israel launched its deadliest attacks on Beirut and its southern suburbs hours before a cabinet meeting and sent a record number of evacuation warnings.
Israel continued its offensive against Hezbollah until the last minute before calling for a ceasefire, and according to local authorities, the attack killed at least 24 people across the country
