Yuen Long, 29th December 2024, Hong Kong – The DAB’s Ethnic Minorities Committee and Yuen Long Branch hosted an inclusive football tournament at Tung Tau Industrial Area Playground, bringing together around 100 participants from various ethnic minority groups.
This year’s multicultural football event was themed to welcome the 15th National Games and aimed to foster integration among ethnic minority youth, promote racial harmony, and enhance national awareness within these communities.
Mr. Jason Chong, Vice Chairman of DAB’s Ethnic Minorities Committee, shared that this marks his fourth year organizing this inclusive sports event since 2019. Over the years, the committee has focused on community inclusion through sports, using football as a unifying force among ethnic minorities. “Today’s tournament showcased the enthusiasm and active participation of players,” Chong noted, emphasizing the committee’s commitment to organizing future events for ethnic minority communities.
Mr. Chiu Man-Leong, Political Assistant to the Secretary for Culture, Sports, and Tourism, expressed gratitude for DAB’s contributions to the ethnic minority community and its role as a communication bridge between these groups and the government. He announced the government’s plans to promote urban sports that are popular among youth, including five-a-side football, three-on-three basketball, breakdancing, skateboarding, and sport climbing.
The tournament featured eight teams representing ethnicities such as Indian, Pakistani, Nepali, and Bangladeshi, along with a team from the Yuen Long police district. The event allowed participants to showcase their football skills and served as a significant opportunity for social integration and cultural cohesion among diverse communities.
In attendance as officiating guests were Mr. Leung Che-Cheung, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference; Miss Ong Kei-Hang, Assistant District Officer of Yuen Long; Mr. Lam Chi-Kin, District Leisure Manager; and Ms. Lo Hoi-Lam, Chief Inspector of Police from the Yuen Long Police District.
The event highlighted the importance of sports in building community ties and fostering understanding among different cultural backgrounds in Hong Kong.
